NOTE: The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians – Canada (“ICJP – Canada”) has provided the Government of Canada with notice of intent to seek the prosecution of Canadian officials who are allegedly complicit in Israel’s war crimes. ICJP Canada is also considering expanding the scope of its initiative to pursue accountability of Canadian companies who are allegedly complicit in Israel’s war crimes. Like Canada’s Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court applies to both state actors and private individuals. The latter makes it an offence to, “aid, abet or otherwise assist,” in the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Beyond these investments, RBC has investments in Elbit, and also provided funds in support of Israel after October 7, 2023.

Also, there is indication that RBC is invested in Elbit.

Why the day of action?

RBC is the biggest funder of fossil fuels in Canada (5th in the world). It has poured over $250 Billion into fossil fuels since the Paris climate agreement was signed. RBC is also financing the Coastal GasLink Pipeline on Wet’suwet’en territory, as well as countless other human rights violating and climate-wrecking projects worldwide.

On April 11th, RBC’s shareholders and executives will come together for their Annual General Meeting (AGM). Their company will be in the spotlight – and they know it. For RBC leadership, it’s critical that the day goes well and that their greenwashed narrative is echoed uncritically by the press.

You  can make sure that doesn’t happen.

That’s why so many are  joining a widespread network of organizations and individuals who will take action together on Saturday, April 6th, in cities and towns all across the country.

This year, you will be standing in solidarity once again with a delegation of Indigenous representatives from Nations across Turtle Island and around the world, who will be bringing their message to the AGM itself. RBC is complicit in human rights abuses and genocide at home and around the world. Their investments in the Coastal GasLink pipeline violate Wet’suwet’en rights and have led to militarized RCMP violence and a multiyear campaign of surveillance, harassment, and brutality. Their investments in tar sands extraction (Imperial Oil, TransMountain Expansion) violate Indigenous rights, cause devastating health impacts, and have led to ecocide. Their investments in weapons and surveillance technology advance the genocide in Palestine, where 30,000 people, including 10,000 children, have been killed since October. They profit from land theft and war, ecocide and genocide.

RBC leadership is feeling the pressure – and other banks are watching in fear and dismay, desperately trying to avoid similar campaigns. In other words: our efforts are working. It’s more important than ever to  keep up the pressure. RBC needs to know that their greenwashing efforts aren’t working; that the only way they can stop this movement is to put a halt to their dirty investments and immediately call off their aggressive destruction of Indigenous land.

By taking action, you will join thousands like you in demanding that Canada’s worst fossil bank, RBC, respect the free, prior, and informed consent of Indigenous peoples and immediately put a halt to funding the expansion of fossil fuel production and destructive projects such as Coastal GasLink.

April 6th Day of Action: Fossil Fools Day

This action will include large protests in major cities, and actions at RBC branches all across the country.

Organized b Decolonial Solidarity and Leadnow, participants across Canada will be leading mini-rallies outside of local RBC branches, sharing information directly with RBC customers, leaving behind information for RBC branch managers to take to their corporate bosses, and through it all, getting national attention through a massive social media support campaign and press outreach.

Next, check the RBC action map, and check to see if anyone has already claimed that bank and is hosting an event there. If so, you can just RSVP to their event and join forces! Otherwise you can add your bank location to the action map by scrolling to the bottom of the page and selecting the red “Host your own event” button or entering it HERE.

The action will unified under the hashtag #FossilFoolsDay
