Make sure your website is Apartheid-Free!
Did you know that the website platform WIX is a publicly traded Israeli company?
The Canadian BDS Coalition is calling on you to #BoycottWIX. When considering your website building platform, please be sure to take a stand against Israeli apartheid.
On February 1, 2022, the human rights group Amnesty International published a 280-page report titled “Israel’s apartheid against Palestinians: Cruel system of domination and crime against humanity”, stating that Israel is committing the crime of apartheid.
The report says that “Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has pursued an explicit policy of establishing and maintaining a Jewish demographic hegemony.” Amnesty also exposes the involvement of “almost all of Israel’s civilian administration and military authorities… in the enforcement of the system of apartheid against Palestinians across Israel, in the West Bank and Gaza,” as well as “against Palestinian refugees and their descendants outside the territory.”
The Amnesty report followed a report published in January 2021 by Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, and another report titled “A Threshold Crossed”, published in April 2021 by the New York-based group Human Rights Watch (HRW).
Wix states on their website that they “started in 2006 to give anyone the power to easily create their own online presence”; they now have more than a 200 million users and 5,000 employees around the world, including several locations in Canada.
One of those locations is in Vancouver, where currently WIX along with DeviantArt are advertising for a position. In 2017, DeviantArt, an online creative community, was reported by TechCrunch to be acquired by Wix for $36 million.
A freedom of access request also revealed that the Ontario government made connections with WIX in May 2016 with a visit by them Premier Kathleen Wynne, even as she was trying to quietly move forward a bipartisan private members’ bill to ban BDS in Ontario.
Clearly it is time for those of good conscience to take notice, if they have not already done so. Please make sure your website is apartheid-free!!
